Cyclists and the new by-pass

A question was raised by a resident as to whether or not there would be provision for cyclists on the new by-pass. The Clerk pursued this with Kier and they responded as follows: –

“Cyclists will be able to travel down the de-trunked Mains Lane, travel through the decommissioned Garstang New Road to join the by-pass on a shared pedestrian and cyclist pathway.

The general principle around the provision of cycling facilities is that it will be safer for cyclists to use the de-trunked Mains Lane than to cycle on the new by-pass. New facilities will be provided at Windy harbour and at Skippool but the off-line section of the by-pass won’t have cycle lanes. There is nothing in place to prevent cyclists from using the new by-pass but you’d have to be a confident cyclist to consider using it, especially when there is a safer alternative.”
